General & Family Dentistry in Gainesville, VA

General and family dentistry at Lunar Dental covers cleanings, exams, digital x-rays, fillings, crowns, root canals, and extractions for every age in your household — toddlers through grandparents. Dr. Zan sees children for routine pediatric care (cleanings, sealants, simple fillings) and adults for the same-day work he does for everyone else. Cardinal Care, most major PPOs, and self-pay welcome.

Who it's for

Families looking for one practice instead of three. Parents who want their kids to see the same dentist they trust for themselves. Adults catching up on care after a long break who don't want to be lectured. Patients on Virginia Medicaid (Cardinal Care) who've been turned away by other practices in Gainesville — we take Cardinal Care for adults and children.

What it costs

Most cleanings and exams are covered in full or near-full by dental insurance, including Cardinal Care. Self-pay cleanings typically range $150–$220 depending on whether you need a basic prophylaxis or a deeper scaling. Composite (tooth-colored) fillings run $200–$400 per surface, and crowns range $1,200–$1,800 depending on material — our same-day digital workflow often saves a second visit and a temporary. Written estimates before any treatment.

How it works

The general & family dentistry process at Lunar Dental.

  1. 1

    Check-in (5 min)

Updated health history, blood pressure, a quick check-in conversation with the front desk. New patients fill paperwork online before arrival when possible.

  2. 2

    Hygiene visit (30–45 min)

Digital x-rays as needed (we re-use recent x-rays from previous practices when they're still current), full periodontal charting, ultrasonic and hand scaling, polish, fluoride. Dr. Zan personally performs hygiene visits when a hygienist isn't scheduled — same standard of care.

  3. 3

Exam with Dr. Zan (10–15 min)

Tooth-by-tooth exam, soft tissue and oral cancer screen, bite check, review of x-rays on screen so you can see what we see. We answer questions in plain English; nothing is rushed.

  4. 4

Same-visit treatment when possible (20–60 min)

If we find a small cavity or a chipped filling and you have time, we can usually treat it the same visit. For larger work (crowns, multiple fillings), we book it for a date that fits you.

  5. 5

    Treatment plan + next steps

Written plan, insurance estimate, and a scheduling conversation. You leave knowing exactly what's next and what it costs — no surprise bills.

Why it's different here

What Lunar Dental does that others don't.

Our digital workflow means fewer trips back to the chair. Intraoral scans (iTero Lumina) replace goopy impressions for crowns and aligners. CBCT (Vatech Green CT2) is available when we need a 3D look — for an impacted wisdom tooth, an implant plan, or an unusual root anatomy. Our chairside mill (Glidewell fastmill.io) lets us deliver many crowns in the same visit, scan to seat. None of this changes the price of your cleaning — it just removes friction from the dentistry that happens around it.

When this isn't the right answer

If you only need routine cleanings and your insurance has a strict in-network restriction we can't meet, we'll tell you on the first phone call rather than waste your time. For complex orthodontics beyond Invisalign, complex pediatric cases, or general-anesthesia sedation, we refer to vetted specialists we work with regularly — never to a black hole.

Common questions

About general & family dentistry.

Do you accept Cardinal Care / Virginia Medicaid?

Yes. Lunar Dental is in-network with Cardinal Care for both adults and children. Same chair, same dentist, same care — Cardinal Care patients aren't routed to a separate practice or schedule.

Do you see kids?

Yes. Routine pediatric care — cleanings, sealants, simple fillings — is performed in-house. Complex pediatric cases (extensive sedation, surgical extractions, major orthodontics) are referred to a pediatric specialist we work with directly.

Do you do same-day fillings?

In most cases, yes. If we find a small cavity at your cleaning and you have time, we can usually treat it the same visit. For larger work or when the schedule is full, we book it in within a week.

How long does a new-patient visit take?

About 60 minutes for the full new-patient visit: paperwork, x-rays, cleaning, exam, and care-planning conversation. We won't rush it — the first visit is when we build a baseline we'll use for years.

What if I haven't been to a dentist in years?

Most adults we see haven't. We don't lecture. We do a careful baseline exam, give you a written priority list (what's urgent, what can wait, what costs what), and let you choose the pace. Oral conscious sedation is available if anxiety has been keeping you out of the chair.

Do you offer payment plans?

We accept CareCredit and split larger care plans across visits when needed. For uninsured patients, we're building an in-house membership plan — ask the front desk for current pricing.

Will my dental records transfer from my previous practice?

Yes. We'll send a records request to your previous dentist with your signature. Most practices return records within a week. We re-use recent x-rays when they're still diagnostic to save you the radiation exposure and the cost.

What hours are you open?

Monday–Friday 8 AM–5 PM and Saturday 9 AM–1 PM by appointment. Closed Sunday. Evening visits are available on request — call us at 703-349-0099 to arrange one. Same-day visits are sometimes available.

Ready when you are.
