Oral Conscious Sedation in Gainesville, VA
Oral conscious sedation at Lunar Dental is a prescription pill (typically triazolam or a similar agent) taken before your visit that keeps you awake but deeply relaxed. Combined with local anesthetic, most patients remember little of the visit. Sedation visits cost $250–$500 above the underlying procedure. We do not offer IV sedation or general anesthesia — those cases are referred to a vetted oral surgeon. You must have a driver.
Who it's for
Patients with dental anxiety who've been avoiding the chair for years. People with a strong gag reflex that makes routine work difficult. Patients facing a long visit (multiple fillings, implant placement, an extraction and a crown in one session) who'd rather time-travel through it. We also use sedation for patients with PTSD-related dental trauma — common and not something to be embarrassed about.
What it costs
Oral conscious sedation adds $250–$500 to the underlying procedure depending on visit length and medications used. The procedure itself is billed normally; sedation is a separate code that most dental insurance does not cover. Cardinal Care covers limited sedation in specific circumstances — we verify what's covered before booking. CareCredit and split-payment plans available.
How it works
The oral conscious sedation process at Lunar Dental.
- 1
Pre-visit consultation
A short visit (or video call) to review your medical history, current medications, and any prior sedation experiences. We screen for contraindications — certain heart conditions, severe sleep apnea, pregnancy, some medications interact with sedatives.
- 2
The night before
Light dinner. We'll give you specific medication-timing instructions. Lay out comfortable clothes for the next day. Arrange your driver — you cannot drive yourself to or from your visit under any circumstance.
- 3
The morning of (or 1 hour before)
You take the prescribed sedative as directed. Your driver brings you to the practice. By the time you're in the chair, the medication is working — you'll be awake and able to respond to us, but very relaxed and time will feel fast.
- 4
The procedure
Local anesthetic standard. We monitor vital signs throughout (blood pressure, oxygen, heart rate). Dr. Zan checks in with you periodically — if you're uncomfortable, we adjust. Most patients say it felt like 20 minutes regardless of actual duration.
- 5
Recovery + going home
The medication wears off over 4–6 hours. Your driver takes you home. Plan a quiet rest-of-day; no driving, no major decisions, no alcohol for 24 hours. Most patients are back to normal the next morning.
Why it's different here
What Lunar Dental does that others don't.
Sedation in a general practice is only as good as the protocol around it. We follow Virginia Board of Dentistry guidelines for oral conscious sedation, monitor pulse oximetry and blood pressure continuously, and have emergency reversal medications on site. Our staff are CPR-certified and trained in sedation emergencies. We don't do IV sedation or general anesthesia in-office — those cases go to a vetted oral surgeon we work with, because that level of sedation needs an anesthesiologist-trained operator, not us.
When this isn't the right answer
For mild anxiety, nitrous oxide ("laughing gas") may be enough — it's gentler, wears off in 5 minutes, and you can drive yourself home. We can use nitrous alone or combined with oral sedation for stronger effect. For very deep sedation needs (severe phobia, large surgical cases, certain medical conditions), IV sedation or general anesthesia at an oral surgery practice is the safer answer.
Common questions
About oral conscious sedation.
Will I be unconscious?
No. Oral conscious sedation keeps you awake and able to respond to instructions — but very relaxed, with reduced anxiety and often partial amnesia of the visit. If you need to be fully asleep (general anesthesia or deep IV sedation), we refer to an oral surgeon.
Do I need someone to drive me?
Yes. You cannot drive yourself to or from your sedation visit, even if you feel fine. The medication impairs reaction time for 4–6 hours and we won't let you behind the wheel. Plan for a driver before booking.
Can I have sedation for a regular cleaning?
Yes. If anxiety is keeping you out of the chair, sedation for a cleaning is a perfectly reasonable starting point — we'd rather see you twice a year sedated than once every five years not.
Is oral sedation safe?
Yes, with proper screening. We review medical history, current medications, and prior sedation experiences before prescribing. Patients with certain heart conditions, severe sleep apnea, pregnancy, or specific medication interactions are not candidates and we'll tell you up front.
Does insurance cover sedation?
Most dental insurance does not cover sedation as a comfort measure. Some plans cover it for specific medical-necessity situations (severe disability, certain pediatric cases). We verify before booking. Cardinal Care has limited coverage — we confirm in advance.
How much does sedation add to the cost?
Oral conscious sedation adds $250–$500 to the underlying procedure depending on visit length and medications. The procedure itself is billed normally; sedation is a separate code.
Can I eat before your sedation visit?
Light, simple food — toast, oatmeal, broth — about 4 hours before is fine. Avoid heavy or greasy meals (more likely to upset your stomach with sedatives). Nothing to drink (other than a sip of water with the medication) for 2 hours before. We'll send you exact instructions with the prescription.
