Same-Day Crowns in Gainesville, VA
Same-day crowns at Lunar Dental are designed and milled chairside in a single 1.5–2 hour visit — no temporary crown, no second visit, no two-week wait. We use iTero Lumina for the scan and Glidewell fastmill.io for the in-office mill. Most crowns range $1,200–$1,800 depending on material. Insurance typically covers 50% after deductible. Not every case is suited to same-day; we tell you up front when a lab crown is the right answer.
Who it's for
Patients who need a crown after a root canal, large filling, or fractured tooth and want it done in one visit. Anyone who has had a crown done the old way (impression, temporary, two-week wait, return visit) and would rather skip three of those steps. Patients with a time-sensitive event (wedding, work travel, milestone photos) who need a tooth fixed before a date.
What it costs
Same-day crowns at Lunar Dental typically range $1,200–$1,800 depending on material — monolithic zirconia and lithium disilicate (e.max) are our standard chairside materials. Insurance typically covers 50% after deductible (we verify your specific plan before treatment). Cardinal Care covers crowns on permanent teeth with frequency limits. Most patients leave with a final, cemented crown the same visit.
How it works
The same-day crowns process at Lunar Dental.
- 1
Prep + scan (30–40 min)
Local anesthetic. Existing decay and old restoration are removed, the tooth shaped for the crown. iTero Lumina captures a 3D digital impression of the prepared tooth and the opposing arch — no goop, no gag.
- 2
Design on screen (15–20 min)
Dr. Zan designs the crown on the computer right there. Shape, contacts, bite, occlusion — all verified before milling. You can watch the design if you want; some patients find it interesting.
- 3
Milling (20–30 min)
The Glidewell fastmill.io carves the crown from a solid block of zirconia or e.max in the next room. While the mill runs, we keep you comfortable; many patients use the time to make calls or read.
- 4
Stain, glaze, and fire (10–15 min)
Final color staining for shade match, then a quick firing in our furnace to harden and glaze the surface.
- 5
Seat + bite adjust (10–20 min)
Final fit check, contact and bite adjustments, cement, polish. You walk out chewing on it. No temporary, no second visit.
Why it's different here
What Lunar Dental does that others don't.
The Glidewell fastmill.io + iTero Lumina + furnace combination is the workflow that makes same-day crowns reliable for a solo practice. Without the mill, we'd send the impression to a lab and you'd wear a temporary for 2–3 weeks. Without iTero, we'd be back to traditional impressions (uncomfortable, less accurate). The crown that comes off our mill is the same monolithic-zirconia material premium labs use; for the right case, the same-day workflow is clinically equivalent to a lab crown and gets you back to normal a week earlier.
When this isn't the right answer
Same-day chairside crowns aren't suited to every case. For large bridges, complex aesthetic front-tooth work, or cases requiring custom layered porcelain, a lab crown still wins — we send those out to ceramists we trust. For implant crowns where the implant has fully healed and the seat is straightforward, same-day chairside works well. We tell you which path your case calls for after the scan.
Common questions
About same-day crowns.
How long does a same-day crown visit take?
Typical same-day crown visit at Lunar Dental runs 1.5–2 hours start to finish — from local anesthetic through cementing the final crown. Complex cases (multiple crowns, an implant crown after recent healing) may run longer; we tell you the realistic time before booking.
Is the quality as good as a lab crown?
For most cases, yes. The monolithic zirconia and lithium disilicate blocks we mill in-office are the same materials premium labs use. For cases requiring layered porcelain or extreme aesthetics on a front tooth, a lab crown still wins; we route those out to specialist ceramists.
How much does a same-day crown cost?
Most same-day crowns at Lunar Dental range $1,200–$1,800 depending on material and tooth location. The same-day workflow doesn't carry a premium — you pay the same as a traditional 2-visit crown. Insurance typically covers 50% after deductible.
Does insurance cover same-day crowns?
Yes. Insurance pays the crown code regardless of how it's fabricated — the code is for "crown, ceramic" not "crown, two visits." Coverage is typically 50% after deductible, subject to your plan's annual maximum.
Will I need anesthetic for a same-day crown?
Yes, for the prep portion. Once the tooth is prepped and scanned, the rest (design + mill + seat) is comfortable — you're not under anesthetic while the mill runs. Most patients use that hour to relax, read, or take calls.
Does Cardinal Care cover same-day crowns?
Cardinal Care covers crowns on permanent teeth with frequency limits and prior authorization. Same-day chairside crowns are covered the same as lab crowns. We verify exact coverage and any prior-auth requirements before treatment.
Can a same-day crown be done over an old filling or root canal?
Yes, both. After a root canal, a crown is the standard finishing step and same-day works well. If you have a large failing filling, we often replace the filling structure as a buildup and crown over it in the same visit.
